2020 is coming to an end… Hopefully, things will get better as time goes on. This past year has been hectic and I’ve thought nothing brings people more comfort than cute, small taditions that have been going on for a long time. To close the year off in a fun way, I’ve gathered a couple of New Year’s traditions from all over the world. I hope you enjoy! Happy New Year! :)

SPAIN

Eating 12 grapes at midnight, with each chime of the clock, is a New Year’s tradition where many people gather in main squares and drink champagne. Each of the 12 grapes represents a month of the coming year and this tradition is believed to bring luck in the next twelve months.

PHILIPPINES

In the Philippines, New Year only means one thing: cash! So people eat round-shaped food like oranges, wear clothes with polka dot patterns, fill their pockets with a lot of coins… They do this so that it brings good luck fortune in the new year.

DENMARK

Local folk in Denmark literally break unused plates and glasses in front of the doors of their loved ones as a vandalistic display of affection. They believe this banishes bad spirits in the coming year. They also jump off chairs together and “hop” into the new year in the hopes that it brings good luck.

GREECE

As a symbol of rebirth, growth and new beginnings, an onion is hung on the residents’ doors on New Year’s Eve. And on the first day of the new year, parents wake their children up by tapping on their heads with the onions.

COLOMBIA

Running around the block and the streets carrying an empty suitcase is thought to bring a new year full of travelling. I’m sure we all could use some travelling in the new year after a year of quarantining in our home for months.

CHINA

You can see many newly-painted red doors in China during the holiday season. That’s because red is considered the happiest and luckiest by the Chinese. As a result, so many people paint their doors red to bring luck.

SWITZERLAND

Dropping a blob of ice cream is considered to bring a year of good fortune, wealth and tranquility.

TURKEY

In Turkey, it’s a tradition to throw family dinner parties and drawing a national lottery on the 31st of December every year. When the clock strikes midnight, like most countries, there are beautiful firework displays along with a countdown in a lot of cities.
