JUST A QUICK LOOK AT THE LIFE OF JANE AUSTEN

1775

Jane Austen was born to George and Cassandra Austen. She was the seventh child and second daughter.

1783

Jane and her elder sister Cassandra left for a boarding school for their formal education. The girls arrived home when Typhoid Fever (an infectious disease spread by dirty water and food, causing a high body temperature, red spots on the upper body, severe pains in the bowels and sometimes death)broke out.

1787

It is believed that at about this time , Jane began to write short stories and poems , which were mentioned as the Juvenilia (work produced by an artist when he or she was young, especially when it is published or known only after the artist has become famous later) later.

1790

Jane wrote Love and Friendship, which was dedicated to cousin Eliza. She also made up her mind to become a professional writer.

1795

According to some estimates, before 1796 Jane read aloud to the Austen family the story of Elinor and Marianne, known as protagonists in Sense & Sensibility. Tom Lefroy went to Stevenson to see his family, the Austens’ nearby neighbours. Based on Jane’s letters to Cassandra, she fell in love with him, saying that the two had been spending a lot of time.(December)

1796

Tom Lefroy was taken away from Stevenson and Jane by his family. The marriage arrangement seemed insensible because they both had no money. Jane would never see him again in her life (January) Jane began penning First Impressions, which became her most famous piece known as Pride & Prejudice.(August)

1797

Jane decided to revise Elinor and Marianne.After e year, Jane completed her revisions of Elinor and Marianne. In this revision, Jane used the epistolary point of view(involving or consisting of letter writing).

1802

Jane received her only proposal of marriage from Harris Bigg-Wither. Although Jane accepted the proposal for practical reasons, the next day Jane changed her decision.

1805

Jane’s father passes away suddenly from an illness. The Austen girls were forced to rent living quarters. Nearly two years after from death, The Austen sisters and their mother, along with their window friend Martha Lloyd, moved to Southampmton to live with married brother Frank

1809

A desire for a settled life made the girls and the mother move into Chawton House

1811

Sense & Sensibility was published by Thomas Egerton with Henry Austen acting as literary agent. The reviews of the novel was quiet favourable. Two years later, Pride & Prejudice was also published by Thomas Egerton with Henry Austen acting as literary agent.With the help of advertising, the novel got Jane an huge success.

1814

Jane began writing Emma.(January) Mansfield Park was published by Thomas Egerton. The novel was another success for Jane. The first edition sold out just in six months.

1815

Jane was invited to admire Prince Regent’s London residence at Carolton House. The Prince made a mention that Jane should have included him in the dedication of her next work. Despite her strong feelings of dislike, Jane agreed to do it. Emma was first published at that time. Jane kept her promise and dedicated it to the Prince

1816

Sales of the second edition of Mansfield Park not only did not satisfy expectations but it also did cause negative the earnings from Emma.The failure of Henry Austen’s bank venture forced the Austen Family into financial uncertainty. Despite of her illness, Jane continued her work, The Elliots (later to become Persuasion).

1817

At that time, Jane had already completed The Elliots. She began working on The Brothers (later published under the name of Sandition).Jane’s illness made everything so difficult that she stopped writing. She died in Winchester during the early part of the day on July the 18th.
